Demoing Twenty Ten

Right now we’re demoing the new WordPress theme that comes bundled with 3.0, Twenty Ten. Seems pretty sweet and polished.

The header image is a crop of one of my photographs. Right now it’s sort of hacked in, as the header image replacement doesn’t appear to be working with the theme; I suspect it has to do with the file permissions we have.

I guess we’ll be back to our regular look after a while. I think…

Update: Demo aborted for now. It appears to not play nice with FD Footnotes. I may try to track down the problem, as Twenty Ten is pretty cool.

Update 2: Turns out it was a conflict with Google Analytics for WordPress, which I installed today. Tracking of outbound clicks and downloads has been turned off, that fixed the problem. We may need to do some investigation into a replacement or just using the regular GA code since tracking outbound clicks is a nice capability.

So… we’re now demoing Twenty Ten again.

All our tags

For a while now we’ve had a page with our tag cloud on it since we’ve removed it from the sidebar. It sure can be interesting but it’s not all that useful on the sidebar. Supposedly this page listed all our tags, but when I was editing a tag recently, I noticed we had a lot more tags than that. I investigated, found the problem, and got all our tags showing.

So, have a look at our tag cloud if you wish. It will get bigger as we write more posts. I’ve also added a link on the top nav bar to bring the page into view. Enjoy.

Welcome aboard Anna and Caleb

I am pleased to announce that Anna Hurley and Caleb Blume have passed the one and a half month mark at abm and are now here (more) officially (in some way or manner). Congrats.

I suppose I should also be announcing this somewhat sheepishly since I forgot about it and realized it today, a few days late. But you didn’t know that. So forget you read this paragraph.

A post every two weeks (or more)

Today I am starting a project. It is simply writing at least one post every two weeks. Forcing myself to write. I plan to keep it up at least until I graduate (June 5th).

As per Merlin Mann’s description of a good blog, I think the posts will mostly be about technology and spiritual/life issues, things which I think about somewhat often. The relevant quote:

Good blogs are the product of “Attention times Interest.” A blog shows me where someone’s attention tends to go. Then, on some level, they encourage me to follow the evolution of their interest through a day or a year. There’s a story here. Ethical “via” links make it easy for me to follow their speciﬁc trail of attention, then join them for a walk made out of words.

And there’s just a little bit more. I shall do my very best to write good, thoughtful posts.

Good blog posts are made of paragraphs. Blog posts are written, not defecated. They show some level of craft, thinking, and continuity beyond the word count mandated by the Owner of Your Plantation. If a blog has ﬁxed limits on post minimums and maximums? It’s not a blog: it’s a website that hires writers. Which is ﬁne. But, it’s not really a blog.

I don’t know what they will all specifically be about. I guess I’ll just have to note things along down the way, come up with ideas, and write. Even if it’s garbage at first.

That is all. (Oh yes, and expect a post or few in the next 13 days. If not, send somebody to dispatch me.)
